A Manic Day?
Yesterday was one of those days when I felt like I needed to get a ton of stuff done. Probably because my children and husband are on Spring Break next week. We want to go camping while the weather is nice, but I also have a growing list of projects that need to be done around the house. Between Michael's responsibilities at church and hunting, he has rarely been home on Saturdays, and he is also gone on many evenings. So I've been trying to figure out how to get it all done. So Yesterday morning, I headed out to Home Depot, and purchased my long list of things we needed to make necessary repairs and finish projects. (A new sprinkler head, 1 gallon of paint, trees and plants for the yard, curtain rods, a shower door, other assorted small thing.)
On the way home from Home Depot, I remembered that a local grocery store was closing, due to the bad economy (and also that they were over priced and always empty). All their foods were 40-60% off. So Patrick, Andrew, Edmund and I filled an entire grocery cart full of food. This was no small task, because Andrew and Edmund could get in and out of the cart at will, and did over and over again. I filled the grocery cart to the very top, and a new cooler full of frozen orange juice. I spent all of next week's grocery money, but my pantry is FULL of an eclectic mix of foods. Next week's dinners will be interesting.
After I unloaded the food, I unloaded the plants I bought. This is our Family Home Evening project for Monday, so I don't have to feel guilty about unpotted plants sitting out in my driveway.
Then, I started emptying the Home Depot bags and putting each item to work. Carissa now has curtains in her bedroom (Anna, I think you and Andy will appreciate them when you are here in May). Aaron and the twins now finally have door knobs. A few other small repairs. Then I removed the old shower door frame, and 4 cracked tiles around the shower door.
Then I made brownies for Cory's class and Fruit Pizza for a church activity.

Then I couldn't figure out how to attach the tile cutter to Michael's Dremel, so decided I would leave replacing the tile to another day (by now it was evening, and once again, Michael was off at a church meeting)
So, I cut out Carissa's Easter dress, and sewed all the white parts (sash, collars, and sleeve bands). The song " Favorite Things' from The Sound of Music kept going through my head. Of course, Carissa will have a blue dress with a white batiste sash. not white with a blue satin sash, but oh well.
Finally at 9:15, I watched the last 30 minutes of The Spiderwick Chronicles. which I had turned off the night before because I needed to explode at my husband about my frustration about him being gone all the time and not getting anything done.
So know I feel like I can go camping for at least a couple of days next week, at least if I have those tiles replaced first!

Just when I thought that absolutely every Christmas thing had been put away, Edmund came downstairs, wearing a Santa hat, and happily playing his Maracas.
Andrew likes to go just about anywhere, and time I tell the children 'get ready to go' he does all he is capable of doing to make sure he also gets to go. Here he is anxious to leave on Sunday morning. Notice he is still in his pajamas.

Fairy Wings
Michael has been pestering me to post pistures of the fairy wings we made for Carissa's birthday party, so here are Patrick and Carissa wearing their fairy wings. I made them by cutting large cereal boxes into wing shapes (I used the narrow side as the center, and the wings already had 'hinges'). Then I spray painted them white, and stapled cut elastic onto the center segment for straps to go around the children's shoulders. The children decorated them with flowered stickers
Valentine boxes.
On the Saturday before Valentine's day, I helped the oldest 4 children make valentine boxes. Aaron's was also a 'simple machines' assignment, and he had to incorporate some type of simple machine to deliver valentines to his box. We built a conveyor belt with legos and paper.
Carissa with a classic heart Valentine Box. She is growing her bangs out, and we are at a difficult what can we do to make your hair look nice phase.
Cory's box had Jedi and Sith fighting on the top, and classic valentine motifs on the side.
Patrick had a sciribble-scrabble design, with trains rubber-stamped over the top.

As I mentioned in my last post, I finished sewing slipcovers for my dining room in February. Here's pictures. I just love the way it looks. I only have the binding left to finish a new table runner, so I'll post pictures when they are done.

February- A lovely month
No pictures today! My camera is out of batteries, but it's been to long since I last wrote an update, so I'm writing anyway. I'll go person by person.
Michael- prepared a grant proposal to send of to the state DOT next week. Also committed to a 50 mile hike with the boy scouts at the end of May, along with the accompanying preparation. This is the Varsity scout's alternative to a week-long scout trip.
Chelsey-Finished sewing slipcovers for our dining room chairs, also finished tying a quilt for Aaron, and a patchwork and applique quilted table runner from scraps to match the slip covers. Picture will be coming, I promise. Today, March 1st, I was also released as assistant ward librarian, and called to be the nursery leader. I felt like I was going to be resleased from the library soon, but didn't know where I would be moved to. Nursery was a surprise, but I'm glad I'll be in with Andrew and Edmund.
Aaron-Has been preparing for Science Olympiad at the end or March. He is building a rubber band catapult and working on an aerodynamics project (building paper airplanes for acuracy and distance.) More coming on that latter. His class focused on Poetry during literature this month. Parents were invited to attend a poetry and pizza party on Read to a Kid day (Feb 27). All of his poems were about Star Wars. Also, on RTAK day he dressed up as Twig, the sky pirate from The Edge Chronicles. Funny, this month, I suggested we play 'valentine, valentine, cupid' (duck, duck, goose) on Valentine's Day. Aaron asked, "What does cupid have to do with Valentines? He is just a pretend reindeer.'
Cory-Is trying to decide on the theme for his birthday party. Wants Nintendo DS games and YUGIOH cards (please, not YUGIOH again, he never takes care of them). Took a field trip to Tuskeegee to visit museums on George Washington Carver and Booker T Washington. Cory enjoyed presenting a reader's theater play "Uptown Gingerbread Man" with his walk to read class on the 26th. He had a greater flair for drama than I realized. On the RTAK day he dressed as a dark rider from the Lord of the Rings.
Carissa didn't have a very exciting month, However today (March 1) she lost her first upper tooth first thing in the morning. We were awaken at 5:30 with the announcement. She literally lost it, and we have not been able to find it. She insists that she was awake when it finally came out, and that she did not swallow it. We'll give her one more day to find it before she writes a note to the tooth fairy to explain the situation.
About half an hour after he initial announcement, she came down with another one. "IT'S SNOWING." We had a specatular snow storm (for Alabama). It snowed until about 2 in the afternoon, and thie children built a snowman after church today.
Andrew and Edmund- made as many messes as they could this month.
