Christmas fun!

We have been enjoying Christmas break so far.
Saturday, the 20th, was our last busy run-around day. And I even managed to get a new batterie for my watch. ( I confess, I nearly forgot again.)
We spent the first part of this week spending time together and playing games.
We decided to have a large turkey dinner on Chirstmas eve this year. I cooked enough food that I have not cooked since Wednesday. Wednesday evening we acted out the nativity as a family, sang Christmas carols, and read The Night Before Christmas, a really cool pop-up book version that my brother & sister-in-law sent to us a few year ago. Our children were able to have the Christmas-eve sleep over. It is so fun to listen to their excitement.
Christmas morning was typical opening Christmas presents, helping the children open their Christmas presents, putting together legos, and little people sets, playing each game that Santa sent (sequence, pick-up sticks, etc.) I'll have to add pictures latter.

Quotable Clay

Michael, to Chelsey at lunch time: "Don't tell anyone, but I'm going to start with some pumpkin pie."
Cory, 5 minutes latter: "Dad, can I have some pie?"
Dad: "You need to eat something healthy first."

December, it's going by fast!

December is going by so FAST! I am done with my Christmas shopping, and even have most of the gifts wrapped. I still have some baking to do. But even if that doesn't happen I'll be satisfied with this holiday season.
Tomorrow is the final day of school for my children. This week has been filled with Christmas Parties, Holiday Programs, etc. Everyone is excited for Christmas. I'm not sure that my children are learning very much this week!
Aaron earned his Bear Badge and bicycle belt loop for cub scouts this month. He is very close to earning several of pins and belt loops! That should keep him at least partially busy during the winter break.
Andrew and Edmund have come to a tragic day in their lives (Today). I don't think they believe it is tragic, but I do. They can both climb out of their cribs. Ahhh! Bedtime will never be the same. I'll need to clear their room of all toys this weekend.
One last thing: About 1 1/2 weeks ago my watch battery died. Not a big deal, but I have now worn my watch three times to the store to have the battery replaced, and each time I have forgotten! I feel so disoriented. I need to stick a bright pink post it note to my purse, steering wheel, and keys so I won't space-out on it again!

Patrick, telling me about the Primary's nativity play practice:
"I wanted to be Joseph Smith, but I didn't get to be anything!"

Life in general lately

There are so many things I have thought to post lately, but have not. Here is a summary:
Thanksgiving was at the Brown's home. The children had a wonderful time, and we always love a visit with them.
We opened up the boardgames over Thanksgiving break. I was very pleased to realize that we could finally move beyond Candyland, Hi-Ho Cherry-oh, and Chutes and Ladders without playing FOR our children. (As a side note, I think Chutes and Ladders is the lamest game invented, I threw ours away, only to be given one again by our neighbors!) I brought out Acquire, a game that I enjoyed playing when I was young. My kids loved it. Thanks, Mom. I don't know when you lent it to us, or why we have it, but almost 40 years latter, the game is completely intact, and as enjoyable as ever.
Andrew and Edmund are as sweet as ever. They have started clearing their dishes after meals and 'talking' to get me to open the dishwasher so they can load them. If they keep it up, they will be my best-trained children by the time they are two. I hope it lasts. They are both picking up words, especially Edmund. When Shadow, our dog, is inside Edmund walks around the house telling him "NO". I think Edmund thinks the dog's name is 'No,' he also called the Brown's dog 'no' on Thanksgiving. I have determined that Andrew's favorite color is blue, he will only drink from a blue cup, and steals Edmund's cup if it is blue. He also loved music. I catch him changing his movements as the music from the CD player changed from one song to another.
More latter.

Update, Rabbit Stew

It took until tonight, Saturday to sample our first hunting dinner. I decided that instead of stew, I would put it into a meat and dumpling casserole that everyone in the family likes. It was gobbled up without hesitation. All the kids commented on how great it was. The only plate that left the table with scraps on it was Carissa's (Nothing new, she does it every night), and she left the dumplings and ate the meat. I don't know about venison... Hopefully we find out soon, so Michael can be satisfied when the hunting season comes to an end.

Bye baby Bunting (Or Rabit Stew)

Hunting season started on November 26th in Alabama, and Michael was out on the first morning, without a single person from his party spotting a single deer. Michael spotted the largest wildlife, a bobcat, and did not shoot it (Thank goodness).
Tuesday afternoon was his second hunt. He picked up Aaron from school, and Craig picked up Luke from school and they drove out to the farm together. They had more luck, Craig spotted a large Doe, and killed it. (Once a shot is fired, any nearby deer are scared away, so the hunt is pretty much over.) As the evening was ending, Michael spotted a large cotton tail rabbit, and with the urging of Aaron, shot the rabbit through the head at about 100 yards (a difficult shot). So now we have rabbit meat in the crock pot, and Aaron has a pelt (don't ask me how it is actually going to be used).

Quotable Clays

Carissa and Patrick (giggling with delight): "There is a Christmas tree outside." "It is so beautiful." "You can only see it when the Christmas tree lights are on."
(Of course, the christmas tree outside is a reflection.)

Burnt Toast!

When Michael and I got married, one gift we did NOT get was a toaster (I don't know how that can happen, but it did!) So we bought a cheap toaster and have toted it from home to home since then. The center coils stopped working a week or two ago, along with the sensor that pops the toast when it is browned. I should have throuwn it out then, but I just left it on the counter.
While I was checking emails today, a began smelling toast (Odd!) Then smoke. Yep, Patrick started toast for himself. Yummy! The toast and the toaster are now in the garbage. Michael is expecting a toaster for Christmas.
